Salesforce Rune Technologies Acquisition: Edge Agents
The Salesforce Rune Technologies acquisition takes AI into places with no signal. What Agentforce customers should ask their account team this week.

Key takeaways
- The Salesforce Rune Technologies acquisition is a signed agreement, not a completed deal. Terms weren't disclosed and the close is expected in Salesforce's fiscal Q4 2027.
- Rune builds software for military logisticians who work with little or no connectivity, so it pushes Salesforce into agents that must keep working offline.
- Most Agentforce designs assume a live connection. That's a risk in any business with field teams, ships, plants or remote sites, not just defence.
- Don't change your roadmap because of this deal. Do ask Salesforce, in writing, what it means for Field Service, pricing and data handling.
On 29 October 2026, Salesforce announced a definitive agreement to acquire Rune Technologies. Rune builds edge-native software that helps military logisticians forecast supply needs and decide where resources go, including in DDIL environments (denied, degraded, intermittent or limited connectivity). Reuters reports it will expand the Missionforce business, which serves the US military and government agencies.
If you run Agentforce in a normal company, the Salesforce Rune Technologies acquisition looks like someone else's story. I think it's closer to yours than you'd expect.
What did Salesforce buy in the Rune Technologies deal?
Salesforce agreed to buy a company whose whole job is to keep working when the network doesn't.
The release says Rune connects data from enterprise systems with real-time operational data, so field decisions aren't made far from the systems that track people, equipment and supplies. It will sit alongside Missionforce Operations and add what Salesforce calls "super intelligence (SI)" for logistics at the tactical edge. EconoTimes names Rune's TyrOS software as the product built for units that lose network access. Salesforce's release says the founders drew on their leadership experience at Anduril.
What's unconfirmed: the price, and how or whether Rune's technology reaches commercial Agentforce customers. The release does mention field service and asset management. That's a hint, not a roadmap.
Why the Salesforce Rune Technologies acquisition matters beyond defence
Most AI agents are designed as if the connection never drops, and that's the weakness Rune's market exposes.
Every agent demo I've seen runs on good Wi-Fi. A cloud model, a live Salesforce org, instant tool calls. Real operations aren't like that. A solar site, a warehouse dock, a ship, a rural service visit: each has its own version of "degraded".
At Techila, automated case routing and SLA workflows cut average response time by 30–40% for Becquer Energy. Those gains depend on the workflow running when the technician needs it. If your agent stops when the signal does, it's a demo with a licence fee. My Field Service voice-to-form guide covers where that audit should start.
My take: Don't read this as Salesforce becoming a defence company. Read it as Salesforce admitting that the hard part of agents is the last mile, where connectivity, latency and trust are worst. Defence is just the place that pays most to solve it first.
Another acquisition, and a pattern worth planning around
Salesforce is adding a new category roughly every fortnight, and each one lands on your platform roadmap.
The Salesforce M&A archive shows Rune on 29 October, Braze on 20 October, Loops on 12 October, Listen Labs on 29 September and Fin completed on 10 September. I've already written about what Braze means for agents with a voice and how Loops brings agents to dashboards.
The second-order effect is simple. Every acquisition means a new integration, a new data flow, and eventually a new line on your bill. Plan for that now, before the packaging arrives. Judgement: a defence-heavy deal also competes for engineering attention. Commercial field customers may wait longer than they'd like.
What to ask your Salesforce team this week
Ask for written answers on roadmap, pricing and data, because none of these are in the announcement.
- Will edge or offline capability come to Field Service and Agentforce for commercial customers, and when?
- How will it be metered? Use the Agentforce pricing calculator to model your current agents first.
- Where does operational data live, and who can see it, if you use any of this?
My take: Defence-grade logistics is the toughest test of "a human approves". Decisions are fast and the stakes are high. If your own agents can't explain what they did and why, don't send them anywhere with a bad signal.
Try this week:
- List every agent and integration that needs a live connection to work.
- Pick one field workflow and test what happens when the connection drops mid-task.
- Send your Salesforce account team the three questions above and ask for answers in writing.
- Decide what your agent does when it can't reach a system: stop, queue, or hand to a human.
