Salesforce Admin Certification: Worth It? 6-Week Plan
Is the Salesforce admin certification worth it in 2026? Cost, exam topics, a 6-week study plan, and what the cert does and doesn't prove to an employer.

Key takeaways
- The Salesforce admin certification is worth the exam fee if you want your first admin job, because it gets your CV past filters, but it does not prove you can do the work.
- The credential is Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator (most people still say ADM-201), and Salesforce refreshed the exam effective 15 December 2025.
- Pair the certificate with one small project you can explain in business terms. That is what gets you hired.
Only 24 of 326 US Salesforce administrator job ads named the admin certification in October 2026, according to certworthit.com's analysis of Adzuna data. That number makes many people ask whether the Salesforce admin certification is worth the effort at all.
My answer is yes, with a condition. Treat it as a ticket through the door, not as proof of skill. This page covers the cost, the exam topics, a study plan and what the certificate does and doesn't tell an employer.
Is the Salesforce admin certification worth it?
Yes, if you're trying to get your first admin role. It's much less valuable once you have a year or two of real admin work behind you.
The evidence is mixed, and I'd rather show you both sides. The certworthit analysis found that about 7% of US admin job ads named the certification. A separate RevOps Report analysis, published on 2 April 2026, found Salesforce certifications, led by Salesforce Administrator (ADM 201), mentioned in 42% of RevOps job postings. The two datasets count different ads, so don't treat them as a contradiction.
My reading, which is a judgement and not a statistic: many admin ads say "Salesforce experience" without naming a credential. But a recruiter sorting a hundred applications from people with no experience reaches for the one signal that's easy to check.
My take: For a fresher, the certificate is cheap insurance. For someone with two years of admin work, a good project and a reference are worth more. Don't collect a second and third certificate before you've shipped anything.
What it costs
Salesforce lists the exam fee as $200. Check the current figure and any local taxes on the official certification page before you book. Trailhead learning content is free, and you can get a free Developer Edition org to practise in. The real cost is your time.
What does the Salesforce admin certification prove to employers?
It proves you've studied the platform's standard features and can answer scenario questions about them. It does not prove you can untangle a messy org.
This is my view as someone who runs a Salesforce Summit Partner and hires people, not a quote from a survey.
What a pass tells me:
- You know the vocabulary: profiles, permission sets, sharing, objects, flows.
- You can finish a structured piece of learning.
- You took the exam seriously enough to pay for it.
What it doesn't tell me:
- Whether you can work out why a flow and a validation rule are fighting each other.
- Whether you can talk to a sales manager who wants "just one more field".
- Whether you actually learned the material or memorised answers.
That last point matters more than most candidates realise. Techila's own interview questions once leaked online, and candidates walked in knowing the answers. We now generate each assessment from a pool of hundreds of thousands of questions, in real time. Someone can memorise 30 leaked questions. Nobody can memorise hundreds of thousands. The same logic applies to your own preparation: if your plan is to memorise a dump, you've learned nothing an employer can use.
What's on the Salesforce admin certification exam?
Since 15 December 2025 the exam covers eight areas: Configuration and Setup (15%), Object Manager and Lightning App Builder (15%), Sales and Marketing Applications (10%), Service and Support Applications (10%), Productivity and Collaboration (10%), Data and Analytics Management (17%), Automation (15%) and Agentforce AI (8%).
Salesforce updated the exam effective 15 December 2025. In its own admin blog post on the update (22 January 2026), it says the refresh fine-tunes the exam and doesn't overhaul what it means to be an admin. That matters for study material. Anything recorded before the refresh is still mostly useful, but use the official exam guide as your checklist, not a video's table of contents.
Download the exam guide from the certification page. It lists section weights, question count, time limit and passing score. I'm deliberately not quoting those numbers here, because they can change with each refresh.
The areas that trip people up in practice:
- Security and access. Organisation-wide defaults, roles, profiles, permission sets and sharing rules. Know which one opens access and which one can only restrict it.
- Automation. Flow is the main tool, and validation rules sit alongside it. Understand when each runs. My plain-English guide to the order of execution covers the sequence.
- Data management. Imports, duplicate rules, data quality and what happens to related records.
- Objects, fields and Lightning App Builder. Page layouts, record types, field-level settings.
Here's the kind of small exercise that teaches more than reading. In your Developer Edition org, add a validation rule on Opportunity:
AND(
ISPICKVAL(StageName, "Closed Won"),
OR(ISBLANK(Amount), Amount <= 0)
)
Set the error message to "Add an amount before closing the deal." Then try to close a deal without one. Now build a record-triggered flow that sets a field when the stage changes, and see how the two interact. That ten minutes of clicking is worth an hour of reading.
How to pass the Salesforce admin certification in six weeks
Study about six to eight hours a week, put security and automation early, and save timed practice exams for the last week.
This plan is my own, built on the assumption that you've seen Salesforce before. If you've never logged into an org, plan for eight weeks. Salesforce's guide to getting admin certified includes Superbadges in its advice on preparation. They're worth doing because they force you to build.
| Week | Focus | Build in your org |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Set up a Developer Edition org, read the exam guide | Note which sections you're weakest on |
| 1 | Setup, users, company settings | Create five users, a role hierarchy and two profiles |
| 2 | Security and access | Set org-wide defaults and a sharing rule, then test as another user |
| 3 | Objects, fields, page layouts, Lightning App Builder | A custom object with record types and a custom app page |
| 4 | Flow and validation rules | The Opportunity rule above plus one record-triggered flow |
| 5 | Data management, reports, dashboards, sales and service apps | Import 200 records, then build one report and one dashboard |
| 6 | Timed practice exams, review weak areas | Redo any exercise you got wrong |
Don't book the exam until your timed practice scores are comfortably above the passing mark. Paid courses and practice-exam banks are optional. A Trailhead path plus one source of timed mock exams covers most people.
My take: Skip the expensive bootcamp unless your employer is paying. The people I'd want to hire are the ones who spent their hours inside an org, not watching someone else click.
Why do people fail the Salesforce admin exam?
Most failures come from passive study, outdated material or skipping the boring parts.
- Studying from dumps. You might pass. You'll also be unable to answer the first follow-up question in an interview.
- Only reading and watching. If you haven't built a flow that broke, you don't know flows.
- Ignoring security until the end. It's the topic where scenario questions get tricky, and it takes time to understand.
- Using pre-refresh material without checking the guide. Compare anything you study against the current exam guide.
- Booking too early. A date on the calendar creates pressure, but a failed attempt costs time and some confidence.
- Treating the pass as the finish line. It's the start of your job search, not the end of it.
How do you get a Salesforce admin job after certification?
The certificate gets you past the filter. A project you can explain gets you hired.
Pick one realistic scenario, such as a small services firm tracking leads, and build it end to end: objects, security, one flow, one dashboard. Then practise describing it in business terms. For example, "this cut manual follow-ups" lands better than "I built a record-triggered flow."
Then prepare for the conversation. My Salesforce admin interview questions cover what comes after the certificate, and Salesforce jobs for freshers shows which roles to target.
One more habit, which is a judgement and not a rule: learn what an agent actually does. Admins increasingly get asked about Agentforce, and what Agentforce is is a good place to start. I post upcoming talks on my speaking page.
Try this week:
- Create a free Developer Edition org and download the current exam guide.
- Mark each exam section red, amber or green based on what you can already do in the org.
- Build the Opportunity validation rule above and test it as a second user.
- Write down the date you'll start timed practice exams, working back from a target exam date.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the Salesforce admin certification cost?
Salesforce lists the exam fee at $200. Taxes can vary by country, so confirm the price on the official certification page before booking. Trailhead content and a Developer Edition org are free.
How long does it take to study for the Salesforce admin exam?
For someone who has seen Salesforce before, I'd plan about six weeks at six to eight hours a week. If you've never used an org, allow eight weeks. That's my judgement, so adjust it based on your practice-exam scores.
Is the Salesforce admin certification hard?
It's manageable if you've built things, and harder than people expect if you've only read about them. Security and automation questions are scenario-based, so memorising definitions won't carry you. Salesforce doesn't publish a pass rate I can point to, so judge your readiness by timed practice exams.
Can I get a Salesforce admin job without experience?
Yes, but the certificate alone usually isn't enough. Combine it with one project you can explain in business terms and target roles that support an existing admin team. My fresher jobs guide lists the roles to start with.
Does the Salesforce admin certification expire?
Check the certification page for the current schedule.
